Most Michigan homeowners go through a roof replacement once or twice in their lifetime. That means when the time comes, you’re stepping into something completely unfamiliar. And plenty of roofing companies are counting on that.
At TYCO Roofing, we believe the opposite. The more you understand about what’s happening at your home, the more confident you’ll feel in your decision. So here’s a plain-language walkthrough of exactly what happens from your first call to your final cleanup.
Step 1: The Free Inspection and Quote
Every roof replacement at TYCO starts with a free on-site inspection. Adam, TYCO’s owner, personally comes out to evaluate your roof. He’s not a commissioned salesperson, he’s the person who will oversee your job from start to finish. Before he says a word about what you need, he listens to what you’ve noticed and what your goals are.
After the inspection, you get a transparent, same-day quote. TYCO uses a Good-Better-Best pricing model so you can see your options clearly side by side and choose what makes the most sense for your home and budget. There’s no pressure, no upsell tactics, and no vague line items.
Financing is also available through Michigan Saves, so if budget is a concern, that conversation can happen right from the start.
Step 2: Between Signing and Your Start Date
Once you’ve approved your quote, TYCO coordinates the schedule with you directly. You’ll know your roof replacement date ahead of time, and communication throughout this phase is clear and consistent. If anything changes due to weather delays or material lead times, you’ll hear from us.
Behind the scenes, your full job details are compiled into a complete work order that’s handed off to the installation crew and foreman before day one. By the time anyone shows up at your home, everyone already knows exactly what the plan is.
Step 3: The Day Before Your Roof Replacement
Here’s something most Michigan homeowners don’t expect. Your roof replacement actually begins the day before the crew arrives.
The shingles are delivered by the distribution company the day prior to installation. In most cases, unless trees or electrical lines are in the way, they’ll be placed directly onto the roof. TYCO doesn’t control the delivery window, so the timing can vary throughout the day.
The most practical thing you can do is keep your driveway completely clear all day. That gives the delivery team full access and sets up a smooth start for installation morning.
Step 4: Roof Replacement Installation Day
The crew shows up early. Installation typically kicks off around 7:00 AM, and a dump trailer for the old shingles arrives around the same time. It’s a crew-owned trailer, not a commercial dumpster, so it’s smaller and easier to manage in a residential neighborhood.
Adam or the sales team member who worked with you will be on-site between 8:00 and 8:30 AM to greet the crew and make sure everything is aligned for the day. Even though the foreman already has a complete work order, that face-to-face check-in matters to us. It’s how we make sure nothing gets assumed and everything gets done right.
For most average-sized West Michigan homes, the full roof replacement is completed in a single day. It can be a long one, sometimes running until dusk. On larger or more complex jobs, additional crews may be brought in to maintain the one-day timeline. If your project will require more than one day, you’ll be told that upfront.
One thing worth noting: speed isn’t the priority. Quality is. The goal is a roof installed correctly, not one finished fast.
Step 5: Cleanup and Final Walkthrough
This is where TYCO separates from a lot of other contractors in West Michigan.
The day after installation, the crew returns for a thorough detail cleanup and a second magnet sweep of your yard and driveway. This picks up roofing nails that may have scattered during tear-off. Then two additional crew members stop by for a third walkthrough and cleanup pass.
Most companies clean up once and move on. TYCO does it three times, with particular emphasis on the magnet sweeps, because experience has shown that the second and third passes are often where the most is found. You shouldn’t have to worry about nails in your tires, your pet’s paws, or your kids’ bare feet after a roof job.
What About Warranties?
Every full residential roof replacement from TYCO comes backed by a Lifetime Workmanship Warranty. That covers the installation itself, not just the materials. The shingles carry their own manufacturer’s warranty through GAF as well.
If questions come up after the job is done, you’re not being handed off to a customer service line. You’re calling the same people who did the work.
Roof Replacement FAQs from West Michigan Homeowners
What should I do with my pet on install day?
Roof install can be hard on pets, especially ones that struggle with anxiety or loud noises. Whether it be a dog or cat, if you believe that loud noises and lots of workers will frustrate your pet, it might be best to take them elsewhere for the day or even have them stay at a pet daycare.
Do you use dumpsters for the trash? Will they break my driveway?
In most cases, we DO NOT use commercial dumpsters for residential roofs. We use a dump trailer that is on wheels and is easier on driveways. This also allows us to remove trash from your property the same day. While most commercial dumpster companies are very accommodating, it is common for dumpsters to be left on your property for days. We wish to avoid this.
Does TYCO use subcontractors for roof replacements?
Yes, and so does nearly every residential roofing contractor in Michigan. Roofing’s a seasonal business in a state where winters can shut things down for months at a time. Keeping a full crew of employees year-round isn’t realistic for most companies.
The real question isn’t whether a company uses subs. It’s whether they have a strong, accountable relationship with them. TYCO has worked with the same subcontractors for over 10 years. There’s mutual trust built into that relationship, and it shows in the quality of the finished product. What you want to watch out for is companies that hire any available sub for a day or a week. That’s where quality control breaks down.
